With Democrats’ considerable assistance, the GOP is poised to enjoy off-year electoral success without much help from Donald Trump. Perhaps coincidentally, Team Trump’s fundraising emails and texts have become more aggressive, almost desperate, going so far as to question potential donors’ character if they haven’t yet ponied up to support the former president’s political organization and new efforts to build an online communications platform. This approach left at least one past donor, who’d tried more subtly to unsubscribe previously, to opt for more straightforwardness in the email below, sent this morning.

Team Trump,
Yes, please make this the last bothersome email you send me. Mr. Trump’s not the president anymore, and he’ll never be president again. The Stalinist media, Big Tech and establishment elites — including those willing and able to order a clandestine wet-works team into the field should their hand be forced — will never again let him get within a mile of the White House.
So the only role left for Mr. Trump now, if he’s capable of playing it, is that of a largely behind-the-scenes party elder and strategist, willing to fundraise and appear for GOP candidates who actually invite him to do so. But he also must respect and quietly support the party’s candidates who decide his visible involvement in their respective races would be detrimental (see Glenn Youngkin).
Yes, Democrats seized on Covid to slap a big, fat unionized thumb on election scales in many jurisdictions last year. But Mr. Trump’s boorish, unpresidential behavior had turned off so many suburban women that he never had a chance with them a second time around. And if Mr. Youngkin can forge a path to winning those moderate purple moms back by showing how far the left has gone in turning public schools into our own Uyghur indoctrination camps, then Mr. Trump should vow never to mention election fraud again. (Let others speak on that topic to the extent election integrity laws need to be defended.)
Instead he should work to promote others — Mike Pompeo, Ron DeSantis, Tim Scott, Nikki Haley, Kristi Noem, et al. — as they weigh in on education, inflation, energy and other kitchen-table issues. For the good of the Republican Party and, more importantly, for the good of our nation and a world that depends on its free-market leadership, Mr. Trump must forsake any delusion about winning a second term as president, in which he’d immediately become a lame-duck upon taking the oath of office (see the Twenty-Second Amendment).
Tens of millions of Americans, myself included, who very much appreciate Mr. Trump’s upset of Coughing Hillary and his many worthy accomplishments in office, even as he was being savagely attacked by our lying media every day, want to respect and remember him fondly. He and those in his inner circle should not make that impossible.
